By:Hélder Câmara
Published on 2009-04 by

Dom Helder Camara (1909-1999) was one of the great prophets of the Catholic church in the twentieth century. As archbishop of Recife, Brazil he gained an international reputation as a champion of human rights during the era of military dictatorship and for his dedication to the poor. Banned from the media in his own country, he toured the world denouncing oppression in the Third World and making the link between the gospel and liberation. In his many books he communicated a joy-filled, mystical love of God and creation. These selections from his writings highlight his distinctive blend of spirituality and social vision.

Building Access PDF
By:Aimi Hamraie
Published on 2017-11-01 by U of Minnesota Press

“All too often,” wrote disabled architect Ronald Mace, “designers don’t take the needs of disabled and elderly people into account.” Building Access investigates twentieth-century strategies for designing the world with disability in mind. Commonly understood in terms of curb cuts, automatic doors, Braille signs, and flexible kitchens, Universal Design purported to create a built environment for everyone, not only the average citizen. But who counts as “everyone,” Aimi Hamraie asks, and how can designers know? Blending technoscience studies and design history with critical disability, race, and feminist theories, Building Access interrogates the historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts for these questions, offering a groundbreaking critical history of Universal Design. Hamraie reveals that the twentieth-century shift from “design for the average” to “design for all” took place through liberal political, economic, and scientific structures concerned with defining the disabled user and designing in its name. Tracing the co-evolution of accessible design for disabled veterans, a radical disability maker movement, disability rights law, and strategies for diversifying the architecture profession, Hamraie shows that Universal Design was not just an approach to creating new products or spaces, but also a sustained, understated activist movement challenging dominant understandings of disability in architecture, medicine, and society. Illustrated with a wealth of rare archival materials, Building Access brings together scientific, social, and political histories in what is not only the pioneering critical account of Universal Design but also a deep engagement with the politics of knowing, making, and belonging in twentieth-century United States.

The Schooling of Girls in Britain and Ireland, 1800- 1900 PDF Free

The Schooling of Girls in Britain and Ireland, 1800- 1900 PDF
By:Jane McDermid
Published on 2013-03-07 by Routledge

This book compares the formal education of the majority of girls in Britain and Ireland in the nineteenth century. Previous books about ‘Britain’ invariably focus on England, and such ‘British’ studies tend not to include Ireland despite its incorporation into the Union in 1801. The Schooling of Girls in Britain and Ireland, 1800-1900 presents a comparative synthesis of the schooling of working and middle-class girls in the Victorian period, with the emphasis on the interaction of gender, social class, religion and nationality across the UK. It reveals similarities as well as differences between both the social classes and the constituent parts of the Union, including strikingly similar concerns about whether working-class girls could fulfill their domestic responsibilities. What they had in common with middle-class girls was that they were to be educated for the good of others. This study shows how middle-class women used educational reform to carve a public role for themselves on the basis of a domesticated life for their lower class ‘sisters’, confirming that Victorian feminism was both empowering and constraining by reinforcing conventional gender stereotypes.

Practices in Children's Nursing E-Book PDF
By:Ethel Trigg,Toby Mohammed,Louise Ford,Hermione Montgomery,Vicky Vidler
Published on 2010-06-17 by Elsevier Health Sciences

The skills required by children’s nurses are many and varied, and are undertaken in a variety of settings. This book provides a clinical manual of common practices. Each practice is research-based and presented in a common format which covers: Objectives, Rationale, Factors to note, Guidelines, Positioning, Equipment, Method, Special observations and possible complications, and References and further reading. The guidelines have been written specifically for children’s nursing by contributors from well-known children’s units. They are not simply adaptations from adult practices and therefore recognise the unique differences between adult and children’s nursing. The introductory section covers common concepts and infection control. There are also appendices on the use of play as a distraction, and on complementary therapies. The common format of each practice makes the book easy to use and refer to in a clinical setting. Each practice is based on the latest research to ensure it is evidence-based and up to date Introductory chapters cover issues common to all practices to make the book easier to use. The appendix on play reinforces its common usage as a distraction technique A chapter on complementary therapies explains these as they are becoming more widespread All practices have been reviewed by regional centres to avoid parochialism Content reorganised to reflect the Essential Skills Clusters from the NMC New chapter on communicating with children All chapters updated to reflect the current evidence base

Poverty and Literacy PDF
By:Nathalis Wamba
Published on 2014-07-16 by Routledge

There is a mutual dependence between poverty and academic achievement, creative pedagogies for low-income pupils, school models that ‘beat the odds’, and the resiliency of low-income families dedicated to the academic success of their children. This book examines the connection between poverty and literacy, looking at the potential roles and responsibilities of teachers, school administrators, researchers, and policymakers in closing the achievement gap and in reducing the effects of poverty on the literacy skill development of low-income children. There are numerous suggestions about how to improve schools so that they respond to the needs of low-income children; some argue for school reform, while others advocate social reform, and yet others suggest combining both educational reform and social reform. Without a strong foundation in literacy, children are all too often denied access to a rich and diverse curriculum. Reading and writing are passports to achievement in many other curricular areas, and literacy education plays an important role in moving people out of poverty toward greater self-sufficiency post-graduation. Schools and home environments share responsibility for literacy skill development; in school, literacy equals the acquisition of reading and writing skills, but it is also a social practice key to social mobility. The achievement gap between low-income, middle-class, and upper middle-class students illustrates the power of socioeconomic factors outside school. This book was originally published as two special issues of Reading & Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties.
