Religious Resistance to Neoliberalism PDF
By:Keri Day
Published on 2016-04-29 by Springer

Religious Resistance to Neoliberalism offers compelling and intersectional religious critiques of neoliberalism. Neoliberalism is the normative rationality of contemporary global capitalism that orders people to live by the generalized principle of competition in all social spheres of life. Keri Day asserts that neoliberalism and its moral orientations consequently breed radical distrust, lovelessness, disconnection, and alienation within society. She argues that engaging black feminist and womanist religious perspectives with Jewish and Christian discourses offers more robust critiques of a neoliberal economy. Employing womanist and black feminist religious perspectives, this book provides six theoretical, theologically constructive arguments to challenge the moral fragmentation associated with global markets. It strives to envision a pragmatic politics of hope.

The Meaning of Belief PDF
By:Tim Crane
Published on 2017-10-30 by Harvard University Press

Current debate about religion seems to be going nowhere. Atheists persist with their arguments, many plausible and some unanswerable, but they make no impact on believers. Defenders of religion find atheists equally unwilling to cede ground. Noting that religion is not what atheists think it is, Tim Crane offers a way out of this stalemate.

T.U.L.I.P. and the Bible PDF
By:Dave Hunt
Published on 2012-03-01 by

Thousands of readers have been wonderfully and powerfully influenced by Dave Hunt's authoritative, 590-page hardcover treatise on Calvinism, What Love Is This?, but many have asked for a more concise analysis of |reformed| theology. After years of popular demand, The Berean Call is pleased to offer this resource, designed to help believers navigate the confusing and conflicting views surrounding the Five Points of Calvinism, commonly known by the acronym T.U.L.I.P. Presented in an attractive, easy-to-read 5x7 paperback (and |trimmed down| to just 190 pages) are Dave's essential comments on the Five Points--extracted from the pages of What Love Is This? and beautifully arranged for greater accessibility. Some readers may never have heard of T.U.L.I.P. Others, though knowing that it has something to do with Calvinism, find it difficult to remember what each letter represents: |T| stands for Total Depravity |U| stands for Unconditional Election |L| stands for Limited Atonement |I| stands for Irresistible Grace |P| stands for Perseverance of the Saints Quoting from the major Calvinistic creeds or confessions (including actual citations and context from the Canons of Dort and the Westminster Confession of Faith), Dave Hunt proceeds to dissect the |sacred| T.U.L.I.P. one petal at a time--exposing each of Calvin's five points to the light of Scripture as a workman |rightly dividing the word of truth.| With reformed theology and reconstructionism enjoying a recent resurgence among young adult ministries and across denominational boundaries, The Berean Call is pleased to offer this long-awaited resource at an attractive price for owning, sharing, and giving.

The Routledge International Handbook of Religious Education PDF
By:Derek Davis,Elena Miroshnikova
Published on 2013-02-01 by Routledge

How and what to teach about religion is controversial in every country. The Routledge International Handbook of Religious Education is the first book to comprehensively address the range of ways that major countries around the world teach religion in public and private educational institutions. It discusses how three models in particular seem to dominate the landscape. Countries with strong cultural traditions focused on a majority religion tend to adopt an |identification model,| where instruction is provided only in the tenets of the majority religion, often to the detriment of other religions and their adherents. Countries with traditions that differentiate church and state tend to adopt a |separation model,| thus either offering instruction in a wide range of religions, or in some cases teaching very little about religion, intentionally leaving it to religious institutions and the home setting to provide religious instruction. Still other countries attempt |managed pluralism,| in which neither one, nor many, but rather a limited handful of major religious traditions are taught. Inevitably, there are countries which do not fit any of these dominant models and the range of methods touched upon in this book will surprise even the most enlightened reader. Religious instruction by educational institutions in 53 countries and regions of the world are explored by experts native to each country. These chapters discuss: Legal parameters in terms of subjective versus objective instruction in religion Constitutional, statutory, social and political contexts to religious approaches Distinctions between the kinds of instruction permitted in elementary and secondary schools versus what is allowed in institutions of higher learning. Regional assessments which provide a welcome overview and comparison. This comprehensive and authoritative volume will appeal to educators, scholars, religious leaders, politicians, and others interested in how religion and education interface around the world.

Everyday Anarchy PDF
By:Stefan Molyneux
Published on 2017-11-09 by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform

It's hard to know whether a word can ever be rehabilitated - or whether the attempt should even be made. The word |anarchy| evokes images of dangerous mobs, spiky-haired youths hurling garbage cans through Starbucks windows, and the chaos of the war of all against all. However, the word |anarchy| simply means |without rulers| - and this state of affairs is something we desperately desire and defend in so many areas of our own lives. If a political ruler were to tell us who to marry, what to learn, and which job to take, we would rebel against such tyrannical intrusions on our freedoms. If the government were to tell us what to read, want to watch and what to listen to, we would justifiably cry |censorship| and lead the charge against such mind control. How can we reconcile this contradiction? Is being |without rulers| good, or bad? How can we fear something so terribly, while at the same time treasuring it so mightily? |Everyday Anarchy| addresses this challenge head-on, arguing that being free of rulers is not something to fear - personally or politically - but rather a goal that we must constantly strive towards.

Communicating Through Story Characters PDF
By:Pamela Brooke
Published on 1995 by University Press of America

From Aesop's fables to Christ's parables to the Grimm Brother's fairytales, storytelling has been a valuable teaching tool throughout history. In this book, Pamela Brooke shows how storytelling can effectively be used to affect change and educate individuals, particularly in developing countries, through various radio formats, including short spots, plays, soap operas, and novellas. Using real-life examples such as the use of radio drama in malaria prevention in Africa, she discusses the ins and outs of developing educational radio programs, including offering advice on where to look for talented actors, what you should consider in using sound effects, and how to organize the recording session. Regardless of the message, whether it is to affect change in personal behavior or a call for social reform, telling a story with vivid characters and a mesmerizing plot is the most effective way to penetrate the audience's consciousness. Contents: When the Facts are Not Enough; How We Learn From Stories; How to Choose a Radio Format and Dramatic Style; How to Create a Radio Drama Storyline; How to Write a Radio Drama Script; How to Bring a Script to Life in the Studio; References; Index.

Bible Nation PDF
By:Candida R. Moss,Joel S. Baden
Published on 2017-09-22 by Princeton University Press

How the billionaire owners of Hobby Lobby are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to make America a “Bible nation” Like many evangelical Christians, the Green family of Oklahoma City believes that America was founded on a “biblical worldview as a Christian nation.” But the Greens are far from typical evangelicals in other ways. The billionaire owners of Hobby Lobby, a huge nationwide chain of craft stores, the Greens came to national attention in 2014 after successfully suing the federal government over their religious objections to provisions of the Affordable Care Act. What is less widely known is that the Greens are now America’s biggest financial supporters of Christian causes—and they are spending hundreds of millions of dollars in an ambitious effort to increase the Bible’s influence on American society. In Bible Nation, Candida Moss and Joel Baden provide the first in-depth investigative account of the Greens’ sweeping Bible projects and the many questions they raise. Bible Nation tells the story of the Greens’ rapid acquisition of an unparalleled collection of biblical antiquities; their creation of a closely controlled group of scholars to study and promote their collection; their efforts to place a Bible curriculum in public schools; and their construction of a $500 million Museum of the Bible near the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Bible Nation reveals how these seemingly disparate initiatives promote a very particular set of beliefs about the Bible—and raise serious ethical questions about the trade in biblical antiquities, the integrity of academic research, and more. Bible Nation is an important and timely account of how a vast private fortune is being used to promote personal faith in the public sphere—and why it should matter to everyone.
